Why This Reference Exists
Erie County has no single volume that identifies every current resident. The County Clerk maintains recorded land instruments and other county filings; Real Property Tax Services connects addresses to parcels; elections records have their own statutory limits; and historical Buffalo listings live in library, museum, and city collections. The Erie County Residents Directory brings those distinct routes together so a name, address, or older household can be directed to the correct official portal, office, or research shelf.
The local differences matter. Buffalo vital records before 1914 remain a city route, while other events can involve a local registrar or the New York State Department of Health. County Clerk land records have online cutoffs that differ from their maintained history. We identify those boundaries because a blank online result often means the search needs a different date range or custodian.
What Is Included
- Search routes: the street directory, city directory, and resident lookup use different local records.
- Custodian details: Erie County Clerk, property, elections, court, vital-record, library, and archive access paths.
- Historical methods: directory, census, map, obituary, deed, and probate leads for an earlier household.
- Limits and access rules: New York FOIL, record-specific confidentiality, and the difference between an index and a certified record.
What We Cannot Provide
Erie County Residents Directory is privately operated and has no relationship with Erie County, Buffalo, New York State, a court, library, or public-records office. We cannot certify, retrieve, alter, or delete a government record. We also cannot confirm that a person currently lives at an address. Those questions belong with the office that maintains the relevant record.
- We cannot add a person to, or remove a person from, an official roll or database.
- We cannot resolve a record dispute or give legal advice.
- We cannot promise that an outside portal, fee, coverage date, or office procedure remains unchanged.
- We cannot disclose a protected address, sealed record, or confidential registration.
- We cannot replace a custodian’s own correction or certified-copy process.
Only the responsible custodian can verify, certify, or correct an official record. Confirm the record date and access rule directly with that office.
